Shipping Giant Maersk to Cease Operations at Port of Felixstowe in 2024

Maersk, one of the world’s leading shipping companies, has announced plans to discontinue operations at the Port of Felixstowe starting February 2024.

The decision follows a review of its network operations, with the company opting to shift its UK operations to London Gateway, located along the River Thames in Thurrock, Essex. Maersk stated that the move aligns with its strategy to streamline operations and enhance service efficiency.

In a statement, the company explained:
“This strategic decision comes as part of our ambition to reduce network complexity by focusing on single-operator loops and minimizing port calls per service. Our goal is to improve reliability, reach, and speed for our customers.

“As a result, Felixstowe will no longer be part of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s shared Gemini network. This change will impact Asia-Europe trade routes under the Gemini cooperation.”

While the Gemini services for Middle East-Europe (via London Gateway) and Trans-Atlantic routes (via Southampton) will remain unaffected, Maersk’s other services in the Gemini network will undergo adjustments.

Details about the exact number of ships affected by this change at Felixstowe remain unclear. Maersk has indicated that further information will be released in the coming weeks.

The shift marks a significant change for the Suffolk-based port, historically one of the UK's busiest shipping hubs.
